Q1 - How did your childhood influence your work ethic and attitude towards business?

My mum and dad brought me up to understand that you have to earn respect, work hard for the things you want from life and enjoy life.

I was very much into all sports and was a county/national level gymnast, which required me to be competitive, understand losing and winning, be focused and have the hunger to succeed.

Sports in general helped me to take direction, work to a strategy, plan, be a team player and be self-motivated . I instil this into everything I do, however you can have the best coach/boss in the world, have the most supportive friends and family around you, BUT if you do not enjoy what you are doing, success will be elusive.

Q2 - What do you believe the principles of a successful business are today? 

Always set personal development goals and ensure you keep up to date and moving forward with best business practises, invest in your workforce and lead by example, understand how to maximise on all social media platforms that will support your business and community. Create a short term path in defining and executing against a set of milestones to celebrate progress along the way. Ensure great communication internally to your staff, to support and offer the best customer care. Wellness and mental health is important to be instilled in your staff and your offerings, being mindful of sustainability and always know what your USP is are critical to the salon and spa industry.

Q3 - Looking back, what was your best business decision?

Stepping away from a well known established company, to go and work for a start-up wellness business with Lara Morgan, which is constantly evolving and learning, has made me a stronger minded business women, and broaden my knowledge further not only within the Salon/Spa world, but also into the wellness and hospitality sector.

Q4 - Who has influenced you the most through your career?

I trained at Henlow Grange (now known as Champneys Henlow) as a YTS student, this meant on the job training with 1 day a week at college. This really influenced my passion for the Beauty Industry and taught me that when you provide a service -aftercare is important and i aspired into sales too, it helped me to understand the business from all the angles within hospitality & Spa.

Lara (Scentered Founder & Entrepreneur) is also a big influence to me and is a privilege to work alongside her. Lara is best known for growing Pacific Direct, from start‐up to a successful exit. Whilst mentoring and investing in other businesses, she found time to also raise 3 daughters with her husband and look after herself.

Q5 - What was your most difficult / worst business decision?

I would say difficult BUT best decision that I have made, was leaving a well-known corporate company and going to work for a start-up business. The difficulty of this was having security of a corporate business, in a start-up you are looking at business in a different way and are responsible to achieving the success.

Any business decision that did not work out how I had planned, became a learning experience and that has made me a stronger more controlled business minded person.

Q6 - What would you say was the single most advantageous character trait for success?

Adventurous – The biggest risk you can take, is not taking any risk in this world as it is ever changing. We know that to be successful, we must be willing to take risks. However don't take risks lightly, plan for the unknown and make a calculated decision that is best for you and your business. Step out of your comfort zone.

Q7 - What happens when you’re stressed or overwhelmed?

I have to step away from what has overwhelmed me, as I know I will not be working at my best. I go for a walk with my dogs to clear my head, and of course this may look like a plug but I can tell you now it is not! as I practise what I preach (Sell). Part of my ritual, that is now a habit, I apply my Scentered therapy balm to enhance the mood I want to be throughout the day, the mindful tool encourages me to Stop and take a breath helping me to re-focus, be more relaxed or even just happier. Shameless plug over but very true. 

Q8 - How do you invest in your own wellbeing. How do you look after yourself?

I head to the Norfolk coast where we have a chalet, this is about me time with friends family, coastal walks with my dogs (Love being by the sea) and feeling the sand between my toes. I have also invested in an acupressure mat that helps with relaxation and meditation that I use regularly and of course light my candle and use my balms.

Q9 - If you could change one thing about the spa and wellness industry what would it be and why?

One thing that I would change about the Spa and Wellness industry, would be to remove the stigma that Spa is a treat and should be like going to the hairdressers, which everyone does without a second thought! Plus with Wellness to remove the stigma that it is an earthy crunchy thing. If Spa and wellness make you feel and look good why would you not add it into your diary as regular appointment in the same way you do for your hair.  

Q10 - Finally, What’s your favourite quote or the best advice you’ve ever been given?

I was given a book by Lara with a message Lara wrote inside – “Possibly the best sales book ever!” “Take care to always progress, keep learning and asking for the order!” the book is called “How to Become a Rainmaker” by Jeffery J. Fox. I keep it in my bag and take it everywhere as has great tips and sometimes you need that reminder.

1. What’s your favourite book?

How to become a Rainmaker for business as mentioned above – however on a personal level “You are a Badass! How to Stop Doubting your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life” by Jen Sincero – with a how to guide (Which is needed sometimes as we all forget). It also has an entertaining side to this book which helps you to understand yourself better and appreciate not everything can be changed.  Jen also teaches you to even love the bits you cannot change.

2. What’s your favourite film of all time?

Favourite film of all time is hard for me it’s about the mood I am in. If I had to pick one it would be “The Neverending Story”

3. If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?

If I could have dinner with anyone, I would be greedy and choose 2 people. Morecombe and Wise. Why… because laughter is the best medicine and I love their old school comedy. I have the sign Bring me Sunshine lyrics up in my kitchen, which when you read you can't help but actually sing it and smile. If they weren’t available then it would be Oliver and Hardy.

4. You get taken to your favourite place to be, where are you taken?

Norfolk – so that I am near the sea and take my dogs with me.

5. Your perfect dinner is?

Thai Food

6. Your go to drink is?

Hard, in winter I go for a good Red Wine. In summer I go for a good white wine.

7. Your favourite sweet treat is?

Buttons 

8. What’s your favourite essential oil/scent?

Essential Oil and Scent is a hard one to answer as it depends on the mood and emotion I want to feel. Currently after the holidays I am into Rosemary and Clary Sage in my Focus balm from Scentered, it keeps me clear minded and focused on the job in hand.

9. You go for a treatment - what do you have and why?

A facial – Being a Beauty therapist and Sports therapist by trade I cannot relax having a massage – but no matter what a facial is the only treatment I fall asleep with.

10.What’s your favourite flower?

Sunflowers are my favourite flowers.

11.You want to sleep deeply, what do you do?

To help me to sleep deeply – I have a relaxing bath with a candle burning as my light, ensure the house is the right temp for me and after apply my sleep balm and take a moment and breathe. I have a Yogi Bare Acupressure mat that I lay on for 20mins every evening, to help relax and release endorphins. I suffer with my back and this is also my best pain relief, then get into bed. I have the best night sleep when I follow this as a whole routine. 

12.You want to energise fast, what do you do?

I apply my Focus balm which I mentioned earlier (I know I work for Scentered, however this is not a plug I really do use it and it really helps me through). I also find something on Youtube that will make me laugh like watching the breakfast scene from Morecombe and wise, which then energises me.

13.The theme tune to your life is?

Kelly Clarkson – Stronger 

14.What makes you laugh to your belly?

Other than the comedy duos I have already mentioned, my friends. We have some really great belly laughs.

15.What’s your favourite season?

Autumn – due to the colours of the country side and starting to wrap up warm.

16. What’s your favourite colour?

Green 

17. Your favourite time of day is?

08.15am as that’s the time me and my dad take the dogs for a walk.

18. If you could have been anyone or anything else, what / who would you be?

I am happy with myself so there is no one else I would rather be. If I had to come back as something that is not me it would be a Dog that belongs to a loving family.

19. What’s your current TV guilty secret?

My current guilty TV pleasure (don’t judge lol) “Neighbours”

20. Magic dust - you can learn one new skill instantly, what is it?

Be able to speak to animals, just like Doctor Dolittle!

 

I started out training to be a Beauty & Sports therapist, I have been very lucky to have worked my way through various sections from the world of Skincare (Clarins and ELEMIS direct), Beauty and Distribution globally with over 25 years experience in the industry.
