Q1 - How did your childhood influence your work ethic and attitude towards
My mother always taught me to be conscientious, so when I first started working it
was instilled in me to be reliable and to never let my boss down. I’ve always realised
the importance of consistency and being trusted to do the job I was employed to do.
Q2 - What do you believe the principles of a successful business are today?
It’s all about client retention. Looking after your clients is the priority and will always
be the number one driver of my business day in, day out.
Q3 - Looking back, what was your best business decision?
Opening our Chelsea clinic in the middle of a recession – I went with my gut instinct.
Q4 - Who has influenced you the most through your career?
My biggest influence has been David Hicks (MD at Wigmore Medical), he was the
one who said to me all those years ago ‘Esther, you should open up a surgical suite’.
He is a great mentor to me.
Q5 - What was your most difficult / worst business decision?
A few years ago, my fellow Directors wanted me to take a step back from being so
hands on in the business which meant I was less involved in the day to day running
of the clinics, i.e. stock, ordering, client care and recruitment. Although this
empowered my team and allowed them to grow, occasionally it meant that my
standards were not met. As a result, I have been more hands on and actively
correcting this over the last 12 months. EF MEDISPA is my business, my dream and
as my name is literally above the door, my day to day involvement is crucial.
Q6 - What would you say was the single most advantageous character trait for
Determination is my driving force. There are so many critics out there who love to put
you down, particularly as woman in business at the beginning of your career. I was
determined to prove them wrong – and I have, many times over!
Q7 - What happens when you’re stressed or overwhelmed? How do you invest in
your own wellbeing? How do you look after yourself?
I swear by meditation, it really helps when you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed.
I have been doing Transcendental Meditation for 48 years, it’s a daily 20-minute
practise which has become a way of life for me. Some people tell me they are too
busy to medicate, I always laugh and say you’re too busy not to! I also regularly
practice yoga as I love stretching and the breath work – breath of fire really gets me
Q9 - If you could change one thing about the spa and wellness industry what would it be and why?
I believe the current wellness industry is too trend led. There’s nothing new out there
and people are reinventing the wheel and jumping on the bandwagon, however not
many are adding real value. My motto has always been inner health for outer beauty
and I’ve always had wellness as a core part of my business whether it be nutrition,
lymphatic drainage, IV Infusions or Colonic Hydrotherapy.
Q10 - Finally, What’s your favourite quote or the best advice you’ve ever been
“An entrepreneur is someone who jumps off a cliff and builds a plane on the way
down." Reid Hoffman
